ABOUT
Jeongeun LEE studied various mediums such as natural lacquer varnishing,
metalsmithing, textile, and ceramics at Sookmyung Women’s University in South
Korea. She then continued her studies at Sookmyung Women’s University,
focusing on Ottchil varnishing.
Her fascination and determination on Ottchil work pushed her to leave her native
Korea, she moved to Japan and obtained her MA and PHD on Ottchil work at
Tokyo Univerisity of Arts.
Now she moved back to Korea where she continues to produce her work. The
majority of her uses Ottchil as medium. Ottchil uses sap extracted from Ott tree,
and can be mixed with mother-of-pearl, hemp and metal etc.
In Korea, lacquerware has been used since many years before B. C., and various
techniques on this tradition exist.
Jeongeun LEE’s work is modern with a particular individuality, nevertheless she
masters the traditional technique.
Her main interest is on objects. She recombines and transforms millions of
everyday objects to make her work imagery.
The objects used in her work transcend their original purposes or usages, and are
given new meanings.
She uses her personal ideas and her object-images sets, which can seem even
petty to some, and materialise them into objects and ornaments.
