ART AFTER AI

ART AFTER AI

In contemporary society, artificial intelligence (AI) technology is becoming increasingly commonplace, leading to rapid changes in human society and culture on various levels. Consequently, there is active discussion regarding whether the advancement of AI technology will bring progress and expansion to humanity or create unexpected, fundamental changes in the socio-cultural system we have built. This is because AI technology has brought about changes that humanity has never experienced before, and the extent and depth of its influence are expected to become even more powerful, making it difficult to predict the direction of future changes. Futurist Ray Kurzweil, through the concept of the "technological singularity," argues that in the near future, humanity may reach a point where it can no longer understand or control the improvement and evolution of AI.

However, it is crucial to focus on the fact that the changes brought by AI technology have already begun and are being experienced by contemporaries, not just at a future point in time. Media theorist Marshall McLuhan, in his book Understanding Media, stated that "the medium is an extension of man." The camera is an extension of human vision, vehicles are an extension of human legs, and a house can be considered an extension of our skin. From this perspective, AI can already be seen as an extension of the human brain to another dimension. Therefore, we are now at a point where we need to re-examine the realms of human senses, perception, memory, thought, and even areas like human consciousness, the unconscious, subject and other, and human psychology and philosophy. Particularly, recent innovations in AI technology, such as natural language processing through deep learning, have revolutionized language learning. Considering that language and symbolic systems have been transferred and expanded through AI, it is necessary to deeply examine the extent of human expansion from a media-theoretical perspective.

As a social being, humanity has lived based on communication through language and symbolic systems, indicating that humans have always been structured to be interconnected to some extent. Jacques Lacan stated that the human unconscious is "the discourse of the Other," and that humans "desire the desire of others." This premise suggests that humans are interconnected through symbolic systems like language and various media. Media philosopher Pierre Lévy also referred to the formation of a kind of community when linguistic communication extends to cyberspace, calling it "collective intelligence." From this context, the classical view of the individual subject needs to be revised. This expanded view of the subject is further accelerated in the AI era, demanding more rapid conceptual expansion. In the realm of art, considering that artworks generated in the AI era are based on hybrid references obtained from connected others through networks, it becomes essential to fundamentally revise the existing perspectives on originality and authorship. Consequently, we must re-examine the entire concept of art and artworks.

In relation to this situation, in this exhibition, artist Sim, Cheol-woong, who has been researching how to transform past analog data and media systems into the AI era, refers to things originating from others as data and explains what kind of signifiers are encoded by AI algorithms. It shows a unique work that exposes ambiguous situations that are indicated or not indicated and creates a floating landscape at the boundary of this. The symbolic order that defines the existing human society ultimately reveals the limits of signifiers that cannot indicate anything and reaches a situation where the contradictory chain of self-circulation is dismantled. In the work, nouns with strong referents are used to signify this. Through works that endlessly repeat only neutral signifiers whose meanings are unknown, such as indicating with a particle such as 'ul' instead of 'do', the artist poses questions to viewers instead of answers. This is reminiscent of Nietzsche's Übermensch, who repeats decline and reinvention beyond the limits or boundaries, but here no human will or creative positive energy is visible, making it seem completely empty at first glance, leaving only traces of meaningless signifiers. It feels as if the bay is left behind. This empty signifier left here does not indicate what its content is, but ironically, it makes us realize that it has become a paradoxical tool that forces the viewer to constantly face his or her own existence moment by moment.

In this context, artist Shim, Cheolwoong, who has researched how to transform analog data and media systems into the AI era, presents unique works that expose ambiguous situations where encrypted signifiers by AI algorithms either indicate or fail to indicate something. He refers to things originating from others as data and creates landscapes that float on the boundary of these situations. The symbolic order that defines human society ultimately reveals the limitations of signifiers that can indicate nothing and dismantles the contradictory cyclical links in his works. Instead of using highly indicative nouns, he employs neutral signifiers such as postpositional particles, endlessly repeating meaningless signifiers to pose questions rather than provide answers. This is reminiscent of the superman (Übermensch) who repeats decline and reinvention beyond the limits or boundaries mentioned by Nietzsche. However, neither human will nor creative positive energy is visible here, making it appear as if it is completely empty, giving the impression that only traces of meaningless signifiers are left behind. This empty signifier left here does not indicate what its content is, but ironically, it makes us realize that it has become a paradoxical tool that forces the viewer to constantly face his or her own existence moment by moment.

Artist Roh, Jinah, who has created an uncanny situation by creating a conversational object AI and worked from the boundary point, creates a site where the audience, who are others from a vicarious or mediating point, can interact independently as human beings. By creating this, we are allowing people to discover for themselves about human existence through interaction. However, at this time, the object of interaction only resembles a human in a form that looks similar to a human, and is neither a life nor a being as previously recognized, so the interaction at this time is not communication with humans, but a fictional situation created by AI. It makes us recognize at the same time that there is only one thing. However, even in situations like this, because the audience is made to experience vivid interaction by talking and exchanging stories in a similar way to humans, even after recognizing that this situation is fictional, the audience tries to give meaning to the object or even thinks that the object is alive. And even as they create another fiction that the object could be a being that wants to become life, they become even more infatuated and immersed in it.The artist accepts this in the face of a virtual reality that is bound to be a fiction, and calls the space like a theater stage created by someone as reality, showing that the artist is trying to settle there, making us face the fact that humans can be contradictory beings. . However, considering the artist's position as an observer, it may be foreshadowing that this could be a space where the quantum observer effect occurs. At this point, humans are faced with a situation where it is difficult to judge what is real and what is fiction.

Artist Jeon Seung-il, who has been actively working as an independent film director based on AI media, uses AI technology in his <Tree> work presented in this exhibition to use the familiar shape of a tree as material, making it appear to resemble a tree, but using an image of an actual tree. We present an interesting video work that makes it look like a moving painting without moving. Even though the landscape with the trees is not taken in real time, it is a work that provides a similar experience as walking around a real tree by adding an AI-generated moving effect to a drawing or pictorial expression. However, the author says that every time he looks at the forest with these trees, he feels like he sees humans. The author is looking at images of trees created by AI, but each time he looks at them, he experiences a situation where he is reminded of the human image within himself in order to read the image, bringing the human recognition mechanism itself as content. That's it. The artist's reading of the human image from the tree may be nothing more than a layer of the artist's Gestalt idea projected onto the tree image, but nevertheless, humans are a type of hallucination comparable to the technical error of AI. The artist shows a completely different perspective on the phenomenon and weaves it into his work as material for creative ideas. While exposing the possibility of error in human perception, the author intervenes in the context of human creation, plays a leading role in creation in an alternative way, and reaffirms the author's position. The interesting point is that, ironically, the author shows this as a contrast to the way humans replace the situation by using an AI-generated system.

Huh, Yoon-Jung, who theoretically studies media theory and AI generation logic and continues this through her work, uses Stable Diffusion, a generative artificial intelligence model capable of creating checkpoints, in her works. By learning 54 items, we obtained the results of the author's existing work tendencies. In this work process, forward diffusion, which adds noise to the data, and backward restoration, which generates data while restoring from noise, were performed. What was important to the author at this time was creating a new original rather than reconstructing and representing the existing original. This is a point where problems related to the originality of this work arise when (generate), and the author seeks to present a solution to this through a new concept called 'remediated AI aura'. Walter Benjamin predicted the decline of the perception of 'aura' when the original is technologically reproduced through methods such as photography, but the author analyzed the certain tendency of the magnetism contained in the original rather than copying the original as is by AI, and suggested that creation rather than reproduction The aim is to propose a new concept of aura by presenting a kind of new original through a method. Through this, the author brings out various topics of discussion regarding works of art in the post-AI era, including issues about the creative subject, authorship, and the aura of works of art. This exhibition was planned to reexamine and reflect on existing concepts by examining through work the problems derived from media and technological changes in the essential areas of art that require further discussion from the changes brought about by AI. . Of course, it is expected that no conclusion will be possible, but the purpose of this exhibition is to seek the direction of art in the future by raising questions necessary for this era.
