In my exploration, as implied by the exhibition title“Imagefluid,”I perceive images not as fixed or crystallized entities but as dynamic and freely floating in a continuous process. In this experiment, I delve into the intrinsic potential of pigments existing in a fluid state, characterized by a viscosity that blurs the boundary between solidity and liquidity. The movements of the fluid, disrupting established patterns, unveil the absence of binary hierarchies or laws. The unpredictability of shapes emerging when pigments flow challenges the rational process of image creation, infiltrating and redirecting it. I contend that the power to change the axis and its potential is inherent in the fluid.

In the actual process, I allow the paint to flow, shaping forms by turning the canvas in various directions. Shapes evolve due to gravity, altering axes to manifest in different forms. I intricately weave these shapes together sculpturally, adjusting their density through amplification or reduction.

In this piece, in conjunction with the term‘fluid,’another pivotal concept is‘sensibility and subtle actions.’Much like the notion of‘felt at a glance,’I delve into the sensory aspects of visual perception through meticulous and recursive exploration. The force propelling beyond the two-dimensional plane is sensation and the transition of sensation. As a field providing a spatiotemporal dimension beyond a closed plane, painting, as a synesthetic interface, possesses inherent strength in offering the margin and experience of imagination. I harbor no intention of divorcing the body from conveying the story of the mind, recognizing their inseparability. Consequently, the exploration of the material essence of painting and the investigation of sensation and subtle actions become intertwined in my pursuit of depth.

Imagefluid

<Imagefluid>라는 전시명에서 드러내듯이 본인은 이미지를 고정된(crystalized) 것이 아니라 과정적이고 자유롭게 움직이는(freely floating) 유동적 상태로 바라보고 있다. 고체도 액체도 아닌 적정 점도의 물감에 잠재된 가능태에 대한 실험이기도 하다. 일정한 패턴을 무너뜨리는 유동체의 움직임은 어떤 이분법적 위계나 법칙이 없음을 드러낸다. 물감을 흘렸을 때, 예기치 않은 형상들의 뒤섞임은 이미지를 만들어내는 이성적 과정에 난입하거나 침범하여 규칙을 무너뜨리고 방향을 바꾼다. 본인은 회전축을 바꾸는 힘과 그 가능성이 유동체에 내포되어 있다고 생각한다. 실제 작업 과정에서도 본인은 물감을 흐르게 한 다음 캔버스를 사방으로 돌려가면서 형상을 만들어낸다. 중력에 의해 어떤 모양이 생겼다가 축이 바뀌어 다른 형상으로 나타난다. 그 형상들을 조형적으로 엮어내고(weave) 감도를 증폭시키거나 축소시키면서 조율한다.

이번 작업에서 ‘플루이드’ 다음으로 중요한 단어는 ‘감각과 미묘한 작용’ 이다. ‘눈으로 만진다’ 는 말처럼 시각의 촉각화라는 공감각적 경험을 회회적 탐구로 풀어낸다. 2차원적 평면에서 그 너머로 나아가게 하는 힘은 감각이고, 감각의 전이라고 생각한다. 닫힌 평면 너머의 시공간을 제공하는 장(field)으로서, 공감각적 인터페이스(interface)로서 회화는 상상의 여백과 경험을 제공한다는 점에서 그 자체로 힘을 가진다. 나는 정신을 이야기하기 위해 몸(body)을 포기할 생각이 없다. 불가분의 것이기 때문에 회화의 질료적 탐구와 감각, 미묘한 작용에 대한 탐구를 함께 심화하고자 한다.
