훌륭한 예술인이 되고 싶었다.

그러나 대학을 졸업하고 미술학원을 운영하다가 애향원 나환자촌을 방문한뒤 위로부터의 부르심을 느끼고 30년 가까이 동유럽 루마니아에서 선교사로 살았다.

어린이들, 여인들, 노인들, 도시인들, 젊은이들과 지식인들 그리고 시골사람들, 가난한 사람들과 집시들을 만났다. 그들과 함께 먹고 마시며 깊은 정이 들었다. 그리고 그들의 평범한 일상속에 그들을 지으신 하나님께서 그들과 함께 하시며 사랑하심을 보았다.

이제 그 나라에서의 위로부터 맡겨졌던 일을 마무리하며 정든 그들과 그들의 땅을 그림으로 남기고 싶은 마음들이 들어 내가 만나고 겪었던 나의 사랑하는 루마니아를 나의 마음과 나의 눈에서 꺼내 세상에 내놓는다.

Artist’s statement

I had always wanted to become an accomplished and skilled artist.

However during my stay in a leper colony in Aehyang after I graduated from university, God called me to become a missionary. The next 30 years, I lived in Romania as a missionary, meeting various people: children, women, the elderly, the young, intellectuals, people who lived in the city and in remote villages, the poor, and the Romani. I ate and drank with them, and through those years, I developed a deep affection towards these people. I saw in their everday life that God loved them and was with them in every step of their life.

Now, having finished God’s work in Romania, the stories of these people and their land compelled me to depict the various scenes that I have kept in my heart onto a canvas for the world to see.
