묘심 猫心 Peeking into a cat’s mind

무엇이든 겉모습으로 판단하고 있지 않은가?

고양이는 인류의 오랜 반려동물이지만, 조심스러우면서도 사나운 까닭에 사람들로부터 편견어린 시선을 받기도 했다.

어려서부터 고양이를 키워오면서 그들이 겉으론 까칠하지만 내면은 여리고 소심한 면을 지닌 생명체임을 보았다. 비록 고양이가 우리와 언어가 통하지 않지만 소통이 가능한 경험들도 쌓아왔다.

타인의 시선과 편견에 얽매이지 않고 자연스레 자신의 아름다움을 드러내는 고양이는 사춘기를 거치는 나의 모습과 닮아 있기도 했다.
저마다 자개와 진주로 빛나는 조바위를 통해 선명한 색으로 치장된 작품 속 고양이들은 세상의 편견에서 자유로이 자신만의 아름다움을 드러낸다.

 

<Artist’s Statement>

It is not only books which we judge by the cover.

While cats have lived alongside people for a long time, their cautious yet fierce nature would at times be misunderstood.

 
Having taken care of cats from a young age, I came to see that under a grumpy and proud façade lies a timid creature.

Despite the lack of a common language between man and feline, a common understanding would be reached time and time again.

Unhindered by the gaze and opinion of others, cats also seemed to reveal their charm in a way that mirrored my adolescent self.

 
Each adorned with a jobawi (traditional Korean winter silk cap worn by women) glittering with pearl and mother of pearl, the cats presented in the pieces of work effortlessly bare their individual colors, unrestricted and true to their unique selves.
