Days break through the years in silence and a day moves in the rhythm of silence. 

The substance of a day is disordered, but nevertheless, a day raise itself in the silence.

The pictures by Kim Dong-seok, which have described the world of resentment of the four phases of life by using the real seeds or harmonizing the wonderful details of the veins of the declining leaves for the past two decades, now pursue the more lonesome world of silence. The landscapes of the desolate mud flats or the faraway islands not crossable across the river in a grey monotone are the traces of loneliness collected by the painter for the last twenty years. The petty concerns of the scattered veins of the leaves, and the heavy meaning of the seeds interpreted as a microcosm or the origin of life and the affectionate will of construction to make the layer of meaning by cutting grooves here and there were clearly lifted. The landscapes are waiting for being vanished anytime as if the times are completely absorbed in silence and eternity. The things you see refer to the visible silence. As if their final destiny remains in the hands of the wind by shivering with loneliness, or as if it is the moment of the germ of new life which occurs only after a grain of seed falls to the ground and is decayed in the ground, the single stem branches with three to four leaves only reinforce the silence.

We are paying attention to this silence and the images of the silence. This is the talking silence using silence. What is it ‘talking’ about? Perhaps just as the film <Into Great Silence>… The sounds of leaves brushing against the wind, the pattering of raindrops, the sound of shoveling to clear up the piled snow and the sound that have always been around but never been paid attention to by anyone from the silence start to fill the space. Block the noise of the surroundings and lower my voice. Listen to the current voice of the voice of the essence of myself, which have been growing apart in the busy daily life. It is the voice of sympathy that ‘life is the only one.’ This is the ‘direction’ pursued by the artist and the life where the seed representing the microcosm or origin of life adapt to the order of the nature with the five colors which symbolize the order of the universe and human. That is the form of the silence which is talking that the past, present and future coexist in a united body. However, I want to point out that the good wills of the artist could have been in a more detailed abstract format although they are undoubtable because he believed in the power of recovery of human souls with his introspection of affectionate humanity and humane communion. Like the ‘dreams’ and the black and white paintings of silence filled with diverse colors, and that the prophetic power of dreams are made by the strong shape of the color-black and white paintings.

침묵하면서 나날은 해(年)를 뚫고 나아 가고 하루하루는 침묵의 박자 속에서 움직인다. 

하루의 내용은 소란스럽지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 하루는 침묵 속에서 몸을 일으킨다.

지난 20여 년 동안 실제의 씨앗을 오브제로 활용하거나 쇠락해 가는 나뭇잎 잎맥의 경이로운 세부들을 함께 조화시킴으로써 생로병사의 원환의 세계를 보여 주었던 김동석의 화면은 이제 더욱 고독한 침묵의 세계를 향한다. 인적이라곤 찾아볼 수 없는 바닷가 개펄 혹은 달리 건널 수 없는 강 건너 먼 섬들. 회색 모노톤의 그 풍경들은 작가가 그간 20년 동안 채집해 왔던 고독의 흔적들이다. 난무하던 잎맥들의 잔걱정들도,소우주나 생명의 근원으로 해석해 오던 씨알이 갖는 육중한 의미도,군데군데 홈을 내어 의미의 레이어를 만들고자 하던 다정다감했던 구축(construct)의지도 말끔히 걷어냈다. 마치 시간이 완전히 침묵 속에,영원 속에 흡수되어 버리듯이 언제라도 사라지기를 기다리고 있는 풍광들이다.지금 눈에 보이는 것들은 눈으로 볼 수 있는 침묵들인 셈이다.외로움에 진저리치며 바람에 그 마지막 운명을 맡기고 있는 듯,혹은 그렇기에 한 알의 씨앗이 땅에 떨어져 썩어야만 태어나는 새 생명의 발아의 순간인 듯한,서너 개 잎을 단 외줄기 나뭇가지들은 그 침묵을 강화할 뿐이다.

우리가 이 침묵을, 침묵의 이미지를 주목하는 것은 침묵으로써 말하고 있는 그 말하는 침묵이다. 그렇다면 과연 그는 무슨 ‘말’을 하는가? 영화 위대한 침묵>이 그랬을까…. 침묵으로부터 들려오는 나뭇잎들이 바람에 스치는 소리, 빗방울이 떨어지는 소리, 쌓인 눈을 치우는 삽질 소리, 주위에 늘 있었던 그러나 아무도 주목하지않았던 소리들이 그 여백으로 밀고 들어온다. 주변의 소음을 닫고, 내 목소리를 줄이자, 분주한 일상 속에서 멀어져 갔던 현존 혹은 자신의 본질의 음성을 듣는 것이다. 그야말로 ‘삶은 한 번 뿐’이라는 연민의 목소리다. 그것이 그가 얘기한 바의 ‘길’, 소우주나 생명의 근원으로 표상되던 씨알이 우주와 인간의 질서를 상징하는 오방색의 방위각을 갖고 출현한 자연의 질서에 순응하는 삶이다. 그것은 과거 현재 미래가 하나의 통일체를 이루며 병존하고 있다고 말을 하는 침묵의 형상인 것이다.그러나 따뜻한 인간애에 대한 성찰과 인간적인 교감이 빚어내는 인간 영혼의 원상복귀의 힘을 믿는 그의 선한 의지에 대해 의심할 필요는 없을지라도 그것은 좀 더 구체적일 것,구체적인 추상이었으면 어떨까고 말하고 싶다.마치‘꿈’이 그러하듯이,온갖 다채로운 빛깔로 꽉 찬 침묵의 흑백 그림이듯이.꿈이 예언적 힘을 갖게 되었던 것은 그 칼라-흑백 그림이라는 강렬한 형상 때문이었듯이 말이다.
